Tragic Trend in Brazil: Gay Men Targeted and Killed Via Dating Apps

Since March 2024, an alarming pattern has emerged in Brazil - at least five gay men have been brutally murdered after meeting up with people on dating apps, according to a bombshell report by Reuters

Dozens more have fallen victim to armed robberies after being lured into dangerous encounters. This wave of violence has sent shockwaves through Brazil's LGBTQ+ community, a vibrant and resilient group that's now grappling with fear as they face these tragic losses.

One of the latest victims was Leo Nunes, a 24-year-old bright spirit whose life was cut short. He had been chatting with someone he met on the dating app Hornet, arranging to meet in São Paulo on June 12, Brazil's Lover's Day. But instead of a romantic rendezvous, Leo was ambushed. Security footage captured two guys on a motorcycle rolling up, snatching his phone, and then shooting him dead in cold blood. A suspect is in custody, but that’s little comfort for Leo’s grieving family.

These heinous acts spotlight a broader issue. Despite Brazil's large and active LGBTQ+ population, many members of the community fear mistreatment by the police, which makes them easy prey for criminals. "Because of structural homophobia, criminals know that LGBT people are vulnerable. They know they will be more easily intimidated," lawyer Wanderley Montanholi told Reuters.

The situation is a stark reminder to LGBTQ+ folks everywhere, especially those considering travel to Brazil, to stay vigilant. This isn’t about fearmongering—it's about acknowledging the harsh realities that still exist globally.
