Watch: Black Gay Men Hosted Their Own Call To Support Kamala Harris' Presidential Campaign

Updated: Aug 2

Black gay and queer men across the nation held a call to rally support for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign. The initiative comes after previous fundraising calls from the Divine Nine fraternities and sororities amassed huge amounts of money for her campaign. Watch the recording here.

The online event is being led by Emil Wilbekin, founder of the organization Native Son, alongside civil rights lawyer Alphonso David and activist Rashad Robinson. According to Wilbekin, this call will focus on educating and mobilizing the Black queer community to vote in the upcoming election.

Why This Call is Important

As the first major party Black female vice presidential candidate in US history, Kamala Harris has already made significant strides in breaking barriers and inspiring marginalized communities. However, this call specifically focuses on her support from the Black LGBTQ+ community.

Historically, Black LGBTQ+ individuals have been at the forefront of civil rights movements, yet their voices are often overlooked or silenced. By hosting this call, these men are showcasing their collective power and highlighting their contributions to political activism.

Furthermore, Kamala Harris' policies align with many issues that directly impact the Black LGBTQ+ community such as healthcare equity, criminal justice reform, and protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

A Platform for Change

This call to action serves not only as a moment of solidarity but also as a platform for change. Participants will discuss the unique challenges faced by Black queer individuals and how Harris’ campaign addresses these issues. Topics will include economic empowerment, the importance of representation in government, and strategies for increasing voter turnout within the Black LGBTQ+ community. Attendees are encouraged to share their experiences, engage in dialogue, and brainstorm actionable steps to ensure their voices are heard in the electoral process. By creating a safe space for these conversations, the event aims to foster a sense of community and galvanize participants into transformative action.

Representation matters and Kamala Harris' candidacy is a powerful symbol for Black gay men. Through her campaign, she has already demonstrated that she values and acknowledges the contributions of marginalized communities. By hosting this call, these men are also asserting their presence and showing their support for a candidate who represents them.

The impact of having a Black woman in one of the highest positions in government cannot be understated. It sends a message to future generations that anyone can achieve great heights regardless of race, gender identity, or sexual orientation. This call serves as a reminder that representation goes beyond just seeing someone who looks like you in positions of power; it also means having your voice heard and your experiences acknowledged.

Inclusivity and Intersectionality

It highlights the importance of inclusivity and intersectionality within political activism. By coming together to support a candidate who values and uplifts marginalized communities, individuals from different backgrounds can unite towards a common goal.
